The Lautoka City Council is highlighting the significant role of the local community in the fight against dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease that is currently impacting the region. CEO Mohammed Anees Khan underscored that community participation is vital for disease prevention, particularly through straightforward actions like removing mosquito breeding grounds.
Since January, the council has actively pursued an anti-dengue campaign, investing around $200,000 into city-wide initiatives aimed at curbing outbreaks. These efforts have included extensive cleanup operations, during which 2,014 loads of waste, amounting to approximately 1,492 tons, were cleared to reduce potential environments for mosquito reproduction.
Khan further emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Health Ministry, which has facilitated targeted spraying in areas identified as dengue hotspots. As of early February, the Western Division has reported 1,411 cases, highlighting the pressing need for these interventions.
The proactive measures implemented by the council, including regular monitoring through household surveys and cleanup campaigns, echo similar actions across Fiji, such as those in Matawalu Village, where the importance of hygiene awareness is being promoted. These partnerships between health authorities and community members aim to foster a safer environment and enhance collective responsibility in combating the disease.
