Denarau’s Water Upgrade: A Game Changer for Tourism?

Improving water sanitation services on Denarau Island is a top priority for the government this financial year. Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasized the significance of Denarau to both the tourism sector and the national economy.

He noted that the wastewater and water systems in Denarau were originally established in the 1970s and have only seen minor upgrades since, primarily serving the Regent of Fiji Hotel at that time. Currently, Denarau boasts nine resorts offering over 2,000 rooms, along with various amenities such as a water park, golf courses, residential properties, and a shopping and restaurant complex at the marina.

With ongoing hotel developments and significant plans being put in place, the government has allocated up to $15 million for the Denarau Island Infrastructure Design or Build Upgrade Works, which are now open for tender. This project will focus on upgrading and replacing existing sewer pump stations, sewer rising main, sewer reticulation, and installing new water mains.
