Denarau Marina Dredging: A Boost for Fiji’s Tourism Economy?

Maintenance dredging at Denarau Marina channel has become a pressing need, as expressed by Port Denarau Marina’s CEO, Cynthia Rasch. She welcomed the government’s funding allocation, which was confirmed by Finance Minister Biman Prasad during the last parliamentary session. The $5.5 million earmarked for dredging works is intended to mitigate flooding and enhance infrastructure, both crucial for supporting the tourism economy.

The Denarau Marina channel has not been dredged since 2012, prompting ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and Waterways. Rasch emphasized that Port Denarau Marina supports the development, as it aims to maintain the marina as a safe and accessible hub for vessels, which is vital for the Fijian tourism sector.

The marina is currently waiting for final approval of its dredging license from the Solicitor General’s office. Once approved, Rasch stated they would release details about upcoming plans for the marina.

Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural & Maritime Development and Disaster Management, noted that the project is still under consideration, with technical assessments ongoing to determine the specific areas for dredging. He expressed gratitude for the allocated funds and highlighted the importance of government support for the tourism sector. The dredging is expected to improve access for various classes of vessels to their designated berths and provide relief from flooding issues in the Nadi area.

Ditoka also mentioned the need for careful planning regarding dredging to prevent adverse environmental impacts, particularly the intrusion of saltwater into inland areas. Plans are in place to ensure that dredging efforts help alleviate flooding without creating new problems.
