Denarau Island has welcomed a permanent police post aimed at enhancing security and deterring crime in this vital tourism destination of Fiji. The establishment of the police presence underscores the island’s significant role in the economy, with tourism accounting for nearly 40 percent of Fiji’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Nesbitt Hazelman, a director of Denarau Corporation Limited, emphasized the importance of having law enforcement directly on the island rather than depending on police from outside stations. The new post was created rapidly following discussions with the Commissioner of Police and is designed to foster a safe environment for visitors, businesses, and residents alike.

The police officers stationed on Denarau are equipped to navigate the island effectively, boosting their visibility and ability to support the local hospitality sector and the community. “Now they’re right on the island. They’ve been provided with all the equipment to move around effectively. We expect a higher level of police presence to support the hoteliers and the business on the island and the residents in whatever they do to ensure their safety,” Hazelman stated.

The establishment of the post cost just under $80,000, largely funded through generous in-kind donations from stakeholders. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu described the initiative as a collaborative effort between the private sector and law enforcement, aiming to decentralize services and share the responsibilities of maintaining safety.

“This means a lot to us. We began these discussions with the goal of strengthening our presence on the island due to the numerous resorts and hotels that enhance our local economy. Given that tourism is among the top revenue earners for the government, this initiative is crucial,” Tudravu noted.

The new police post is expected not only to bolster security but also to promote tourism on Denarau Island, ultimately benefiting everyone who lives, works, or conducts business there. With this proactive approach to safety, Denarau aims to provide both existing and future guests a reassuring and secure environment during their visits.
