The Public Rental Board (PRB) is planning to demolish Block 5 of the Mead Road Estate in Nabua, Suva, by the end of 2025. This decision comes after structural evaluations revealed that the building is no longer suitable for habitation. Following this, Blocks 1 to 4 are scheduled for demolition in 2026. General Manager Timoci Naleba emphasized the critical state of these buildings, which pose safety risks during seismic events, thereby necessitating immediate action.
Naleba noted that the board has been proactive since last year, working on demolition plans and consulting with tenants affected by the relocation. The PRB is collaborating with the Housing Authority to offer options for home ownership and to ensure that residents are informed about their future accommodations. By the end of this year, tenants will have clarity on their relocation plans, with a focus on providing adequate time for them to secure new living arrangements.
Minister for Housing Maciu Nalumisa is encouraging the public to explore available support from government agencies, reiterating the ministry’s commitment to ensuring safe, affordable housing for everyone.
This initiative aligns with broader government efforts highlighted in previous articles, addressing housing needs in Fiji. For instance, the PRB recently reported a significant rise in the demand for affordable housing, with over 200 applications received in the first quarter of this fiscal year. The board aims to meet the requirement for approximately 1,600 affordable housing units annually, and is currently pursuing multiple development projects to better serve the community.
The PRB’s plans, combined with the government’s assistance programs for vulnerable populations, reflect an optimistic outlook for addressing housing challenges in Fiji, focusing on providing secure living environments for families currently in risky situations. As these measures advance, they promise to enhance the quality of life for many Fijians, reinforcing the government’s dedication to improving housing stability across the nation.
