Demi Hayes is poised to make her eagerly anticipated return from injury in the opening round of the 2024/2025 HSBC Sevens World Series (SVNS) in Dubai, starting on November 30. Australian selectors Tim Walsh and Liam Barry have unveiled their squads for the tournament, which reflect a refreshing mix of emerging talent and seasoned players following recent changes stemming from the Paris Olympics.

Walsh remains at the helm of the Australian Women’s team, while Barry steps in as the new head coach for the Men’s team after the departure of John Manenti. Hayes, who has been sidelined for almost a year due to an ACL injury sustained in Cape Town, will be reintegrated into the squad as part of Walsh’s revitalized lineup.

Among the debutants selected for the women’s team is Kahli Henwood, who received a late call-up to the Olympic squad in July. Kiiahla Duff is also included in the roster, stepping up to replace the injured Bienne Terita. Notably, the women’s team enters the tournament as the reigning HSBC SVNS world champions, a title they clinched in Madrid earlier this year.

The squad balances youthful prospects with experienced players like Charlotte Caslick and the Levi sisters, Maddison and Teagan, who have had standout performances in previous seasons. Injured athletes Madison Ashby, Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea, Kaitlin Shave, and Sidney Taylor are on the mend, and their recovery could potentially bolster the team’s depth in coming weeks.

As for the men’s side, Barry has introduced players Aden Ekanayake and Sid Harvey, both of whom are set to make their international debuts. Following a historic performance at the recent Olympics, the men’s team has welcomed several new faces due to offseason retirements, including that of captain Nick Malouf and former Wallabies leader Michael Hooper. However, experienced players Henry Hutchison, Hayden Sargeant, Matt Gonzalez, Ben Dowling, James Turner, and Henry Paterson have re-signed with the program, providing stability amidst the changes.

National Performance Manager Scott Bowen praised the team for their efforts in adapting to the changes and highlighted the excitement surrounding the fresh talent within both squads.

The tournament kicks off with the women’s team facing China, while the men will take on South Africa in their opening matches. Fans can expect to witness both established and new talents shine in this prestigious series.

This season offers a renewed sense of hope for the Australian Sevens teams, showcasing a blend of experience and youth that could lead to exciting outcomes on the international stage. With strong foundations laid down, the potential for success is palpable as both squads aim to build on their previous accomplishments.
