Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube has called for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to publicly release the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report concerning the controversial appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Narube argued that withholding the report could result in further damaging transparency and eroding public trust.

Narube criticized the government’s previous handling of Malimali’s appointment, claiming that repeated missteps, including her suspension and termination, demonstrate a failure in governance. He highlighted that the Prime Minister’s involvement in appointing an acting Commissioner, despite constitutional provisions aiming to assign this power to the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), raises serious concerns.

The political landscape has been further complicated by ongoing scrutiny regarding the legal advice given to the Prime Minister. Narube expressed doubts about the quality of this advice and urged the PM to learn from past mistakes to prevent the government from repeating costly errors.

Calls for transparency have intensified as citizens and political leaders alike demand the COI report, emphasizing that it is important not just for accountability, but to rebuild public confidence in Fiji’s institutions. Similar sentiments from previous articles reflect that stakeholders believe the findings of this inquiry could lead to vital reforms and improvements in governance.

As the Prime Minister faces growing pressure to release the report, there remains a hopeful sentiment among the public that transparency will eventually prevail, resulting in essential reforms and a strengthened relationship between the government and its constituents.
