Demand for Accountability: Fiji Faces Leadership Crisis Over Harassment Claims

Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, has emphasized the need to end impunity for crimes, especially sexual offenses committed by those in power within the government. This statement follows the government’s decision to withdraw Pita Wise’s nomination for the position of Fiji’s ambassador to Japan. Ali asserted that the citizens of Fiji deserve leaders who prioritize integrity and accountability.

She expressed that the nomination of someone accused of sexual harassment should never have taken place. “While the Coalition Government has recognized the public outcry, we must remain vigilant to prevent any future attempts to position Pita Wise in the government,” she stated.

Additionally, Ali called for a comprehensive investigation by the Public Service Commission into the complaints against Wise, highlighting the necessity for justice for the survivor involved. “Failing to conduct such an investigation could lead to a culture that continues to allow sexual harassment and violence against women and girls, discouraging survivors from coming forward,” she warned.

Moreover, Ali encouraged individuals who are experiencing or know others facing violence against women and girls to seek assistance. The National Domestic Violence toll-free helpline 1560 is accessible around the clock across all networks.
