The inquiry into the tragic case of late boxer Ubayd Haider is still ongoing, with the Board of Inquiry (BOI) yet to finalize its findings. At a recent press conference in Nadi, BOI chairman Edwin Wainiqolo provided an update, noting that the investigation is facing delays due to challenges in communication with various stakeholders involved in the incident.
Seventeen stakeholders associated with the South Pacific Boxing promotion held in October have been identified, with twelve of them already interviewed during the inquiry’s three-week period. However, Wainiqolo mentioned that the remaining five stakeholders, most of whom are located offshore, have posed difficulties. Compounding the situation, some stakeholders have sought private advice which has inadvertently stalled the inquiry’s progress.
Wainiqolo also highlighted challenges posed by international stakeholders, such as the International Boxing Organization (IBO), stating that they are reluctant to participate in the proceedings due to their internal regulations. The BOI has had to refer certain complex issues to the office of the solicitor general for guidance on how to proceed.
As of now, Wainiqolo is unable to provide answers to specific questions regarding potential foul play, post-mortem results, medical checks, adherence to regulatory procedures, and whether Haider had any underlying medical conditions. He emphasized that these questions will be addressed once the inquiry reaches a conclusion.
While the delay in the inquiry may be frustrating for Haider’s family and supporters, it is essential to ensure that a thorough examination of all evidence and stakeholders takes place to guarantee justice and accountability in this tragic situation.
In summary, the Board of Inquiry is tackling unforeseen obstacles as they work toward a comprehensive investigation into Ubayd Haider’s case. With determination from the inquiry team, there is hope that a complete and transparent understanding of the events leading to this unfortunate incident will eventually be achieved.
