Residents of Delaikuku in the Tailevu region are experiencing newfound relief as they work together to improve the community’s access to clean drinking water. Their efforts have resulted in the successful construction of a water supply system that significantly addresses the village’s longstanding water challenges.
Viliame Vuetibureta, a local youth leader, shared that the community’s dedication was crucial in promptly laying pipelines for this water project, which proved to be no easy task. His group managed to raise funds through a series of yaqona (kava) drinking events, during which they collected substantial financial support to realize this project.
“Through the generosity of our community and the assistance from PIANGO (Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organisations), we’ve been able to secure approximately $3,000 through three successful events,” Vuetibureta stated. The efforts were further boosted when they received funding from PIANGO in the form of an additional $2,000, contributing significantly to their overall budget.
The community has been tirelessly working for the past two months, collaborating to ensure they have a reliable and clean drinking water source. Vuetibureta expressed excitement about the progress made, noting it as a collective achievement for the village. He remarked, “This project is not just vital for our health but also a blessing to see how our community can come together for a common goal.”
He encourages other youths in Fiji to actively participate in their communities’ development initiatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. Vuetibureta also acknowledged local leaders for their unwavering support throughout this endeavor.
As the pipeline installation continues, the community looks forward to witnessing the positive impact of access to clean water on their daily lives. The initiative has not only enhanced water supply but has also fostered a spirit of unity and resilience among Delaikuku’s residents.
This hopeful development signifies a step toward improved health and wellness for the villagers, showcasing the power of community collaboration in addressing critical needs.
