The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) is advocating for the protection of freedom of expression and press freedom throughout the Pacific region. This call comes in response to a defamation lawsuit filed by Surangel Whipps Jr.’s father against Island Times Palau, the national newspaper.

The civil lawsuit, initiated by Whipps Snr.’s company, Surangel and Sons, targets the newspaper’s editor, Leilani Reklai. Whipps Jr. has publicly criticized Island Times, alleging that it disseminates “political propaganda” and lacks accuracy, as reported by BenarNews.

PINA has expressed support for Reklai, emphasizing the necessity of upholding journalistic freedoms. The association’s president, Kalafi Moala, underscored the vital role of media in defending democracy, urging immediate respects for freedom not only in Palau but across the entire Pacific region.

Moala highlighted concerns regarding the state of free speech across various countries in the region, indicating that intimidation from those in power poses a threat to journalistic freedoms. He described the current situation in Palau as a troubling example of this intimidation.

In a proactive measure, PINA has formally addressed the Palau President’s office, stressing the connection between freedom of speech and democracy. This advocacy is particularly significant as Palauans prepare for elections, underscoring the vital role of a free press in a democratic society.

This ongoing situation emphasizes the importance of protecting press freedoms, as they are essential for nurturing robust democracies throughout the Pacific. Encouragingly, efforts like those by PINA may bring greater awareness and support to these issues, fostering a more open dialogue surrounding media rights and press integrity.
