The Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, has expressed that he has a substantial amount of pending work in the Police sector and will await the conclusion of investigations concerning allegations related to improper passport issuances. Consequently, Tikoduadua has temporarily stepped back from his responsibilities in Immigration and Police during the ongoing inquiries connected to passport issuance to children of foreign nationals linked to human rights allegations involving Grace Road.
During this period, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has taken over the Ministerial duties related to Police and Immigration. Tikoduadua underscored the urgency for appointing a new Commissioner of Police, noting the delay in this process. Despite his current status, he remains hopeful that the new appointment will proceed swiftly.
Tikoduadua highlighted the significant initiatives undertaken in collaboration with Australia through the Vuvale Partnership, aimed at strengthening police capacities in Fiji. He mentioned a consultant dedicated to mentoring the forthcoming Commissioner, along with the anticipated arrival of additional support personnel from Australia and New Zealand to enhance the standards within the Fiji Police Force.
He reiterated the importance of the “Restore Blue” initiative, part of a broader strategy to revitalize the police framework with foreign assistance. Tikoduadua remains committed to his ongoing projects and is awaiting a reshuffle from the Prime Minister as he prioritizes the resolution of the investigation.
In summary, Pio Tikoduadua is focused on supporting the police force’s development amid ongoing investigations, with optimism regarding future leadership and partnerships that could strengthen law enforcement in Fiji.
This situation presents an opportunity for the Fiji Police Force to reinforce its structure and capabilities, paving the way for improved law enforcement outcomes in the future.
