Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, expressed his commitment to completing his work in the Police portfolio while awaiting the conclusion of ongoing investigations regarding the improper issuance of passports linked to the Grace Road human rights allegations. As a result of these inquiries, Minister Tikoduadua has temporarily stepped back from his roles in Immigration and Police, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stepping in to oversee these responsibilities in the interim.

Mr. Tikoduadua, who played a key role in the reset program for the Fiji Police Force, emphasized the urgency of appointing a new Commissioner of Police. He highlighted the importance of this appointment for progressing ongoing initiatives and partnerships, particularly with Australia, through a renewed memorandum of understanding (MOU) that aims to enhance bilateral policing cooperation.

He noted that there is a dedicated consultant available to mentor the new Commissioner, along with additional support from three Australian experts and one New Zealand associate, all poised to help elevate policing standards in Fiji.

The Minister articulated his desire to continue advancing the “Restore Blue” strategy, which seeks to improve police operations in collaboration with Australasian partners. He has handed over the initiative’s oversight to Prime Minister Rabuka and the acting Minister for Police, while also acknowledging that his future role will depend on the outcome of the investigations and any potential cabinet reshuffles.

Although the current circumstances pose challenges, Mr. Tikoduadua’s proactive approach and dedication to reforming the police force signal a commitment to enhancing public safety and community trust in law enforcement. This situation presents an opportunity for a renewed focus on accountability and transparency within the Fiji Police Force, fostering a path toward positive change.

In summary, Minister Tikoduadua is committed to resolving ongoing policing issues despite stepping aside amid investigations, emphasizing the urgency for a new police leadership to drive important reforms and partnerships with foreign counterparts.
