Leaders from across the nation are gathering to enhance their capabilities at the 2026 Leaders LEAD Symposium, taking place at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Nadi. This three-day event has attracted over 200 participants, all focused on key leadership skills and strategies aimed at strengthening their leadership abilities.
At the kick-off of the symposium, Chris Robinson, Executive Vice-President of Maxwell Entrepreneur Solutions, addressed an important issue in leadership—complacency. He characterized complacency as a form of “careless security,” highlighting the risks that arise when individuals become too comfortable with their routines, neglect details, and stop pursuing improvement.
Robinson remarked, “I redefined complacency as a secret place of satisfactory success — that place where you’re good at something, you’ve mastered it, and you can do it in your sleep.” He identified four prevalent habits that can lead to complacency among leaders: remaining busy without facing challenges, procrastinating on critical actions, consuming more resources than they create, and losing the passion that once fueled their ambitions.
He discussed how leaders can unintentionally slip into underperformance by simply going through the motions without seeking growth, delaying opportunities that could lead to progress, failing to translate their learning experiences into actionable results, or losing the drive that originally motivated them. He called on leaders to dedicate themselves to continuous development, regularly reflecting on their performance and adopting proactive approaches to avert complacency.
Additionally, Robinson stressed that effective leadership is crucial in fostering positive change at a national level. He underscored that true leadership goes beyond individual accomplishments, aiming to inspire, empower, and uplift those around them.
As the symposium continues, participants are expected to leave with renewed energy and insights that will help them navigate the complexities of leadership, ensuring they remain committed to growth and transformation. Emphasizing the importance of ongoing learning and development among leaders will benefit both individual attendees and their respective communities.
