Christopher Pryde, the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, has responded vigorously to accusations made by Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, claiming they amount to a defamatory smear against his character. Speaking to FijiLive, Pryde emphasized the necessity of challenging these allegations.

Pryde outlined several points of contention, including:

– The Acting Chief Justice’s failure to report alleged misappropriation of funds to relevant authorities.
– Claims that Temo’s statements during the Tribunal were defamatory and unsubstantiated.
– Accusations of contempt towards the Tribunal regarding advice to the President regarding Pryde’s salary suspension.

In addition, Pryde mentioned a letter from Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu sent to his legal representation in October, which reportedly suggested a settlement offer. Pryde declined this offer, insisting on a formal exoneration letter from the President.

He also asserted that the Tribunal’s decision to conduct proceedings in his absence was unjust, a sentiment echoed by the Fiji Law Society. Pryde highlighted the prejudicial impact of the statements made against him going unchallenged, stating that this undermines the integrity of the tribunal process.

Moreover, it was communicated that the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) extended a settlement offer of $200,000 to Pryde, contingent upon his immediate resignation as DPP. This offer was described as a full settlement to conclude ongoing proceedings, effectively preventing Pryde from pursuing any legal action against the JSC thereafter.

In light of these developments, there seems to be a significant tension within the legal framework of Fiji concerning accountability and due process. The case presents an opportunity for the judicial system to reflect on its processes and the importance of safeguarding the rights of individuals within it.

This situation also underscores the value of transparency and due diligence in judicial proceedings. Upholding these principles is essential for maintaining public trust in the justice system, while navigating these complexities can ultimately lead to reforms that enhance fairness and accountability.
