The ongoing Fiji Sports Council Athletics camp, now in its third week, is focused on equipping young athletes for significant events such as the Coca-Cola Games and the National Primary Athletics meet. However, Eugene Vollmer, a former elite triple jumper and one of the assistant coaches, emphasizes that the key to success lies not just in training and facilities, but largely in the athlete’s own dedication.
Vollmer observed, “It all comes down to the athletes. We can have all the contracts, we can have all the facilities, and we can have all the athletes, but if the athletes aren’t willing to do the work, if they don’t show the love of work, they won’t turn up day in and day out when the going gets tough.” This sentiment highlights the critical importance of an athlete’s commitment and passion for their sport.
The camp focuses on teaching young participants essential techniques, including proper running, jumping, and pacing, especially crucial for those attempting events like the triple jump for the first time. However, Vollmer insists that merely having technical skills is insufficient for achieving excellence. “It’s how badly does one want it,” he stated, underscoring the need for a deep-seated passion for the sport.
Participants have the opportunity to train using world-class facilities and benefit from the expertise of top coaches, including Bola Tafoou and notable former athletes like Banuve Tabakaucoro. Despite the advantages of quality training resources, Vollmer points out that mental toughness and genuine enthusiasm are what ultimately differentiate exceptional athletes from the rest.
He also speaks to the importance of coaches in fostering a love for sports among athletes. “We need to create a platform where it’s attractive for athletes to love the sport or take it to the next level,” he remarked. This initiative aims to instill discipline and commitment, preparing athletes not only for competitions but for life’s challenges as well.
This camp is not merely a training ground; it’s a breeding ground for future champions who are learning about dedication, resilience, and the value of hard work—qualities that are critical both in sports and in everyday life.
In a hopeful outlook, the commitment shown by both coaches and athletes may very well lead to a new generation of skilled competitors who are driven not just by their desire to win, but by a genuine passion for athletics.
