The future of Wise Kativerata, head coach of the Vodafone Fiji Bati, remains uncertain as the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) board evaluates the team’s performance ahead of the next Rugby League World Cup. With increasing public interest regarding the direction of the national team, the board has confirmed that it is actively reviewing the situation by considering match results, feedback from local clubs, and the overall development of rugby league in Fiji.
FNRL Board Chair Akuila Masi highlighted that the topic was one of the key points discussed during recent board meetings. He acknowledged the growing conversation on social media and in print regarding Kativerata’s role. “We understand there has been discussion on social media and in the newspapers regarding the position of the head coach. We have had our discussion today and looked at it from all angles,” he stated.
Masi emphasized the urgency of the review process given the impending World Cup, alongside a call from local clubs for improved performance and clear pathways for player development. “The World Cup is just around the corner and the clubs are also asking for results and growth of the game. We have mixed comments from everywhere and the board is aware of that,” he added.
The board’s ongoing review is expected to conclude in the coming days, with Masi indicating, “We have discussed it at our level and next week we should be able to complete the process and advise our partners and stakeholders on the progress.” An official decision regarding Kativerata’s future will be announced following the completion of this review, shedding light on the national team’s direction as they prepare for the upcoming tournament.
This ongoing evaluation could pave the way for vital changes that enhance the squad’s prospects, encouraging a stronger performance at the World Cup and ultimately fostering growth within Fiji’s rugby league landscape.
