On the night of February 20, 2016, Taniela Voreqe made a tragic yet selfless choice to protect his family during the devastating Cyclone Winston, ultimately sacrificing his life in the process. Now, a decade later, the emotional scars of that night remain fresh for his family, but so does a profound faith that has propelled them forward amidst their grief.

Mr. Voreqe, a seasonal worker with the Fiji Sugar Corporation, was attempting to secure his home in Drasa, Lautoka, when the cyclone’s ferocity escalated. As debris flew through the air, one of the objects struck him, rendering him unconscious and leading to his untimely death that night.

Laite Voreqe, his widow, reflects on the overwhelming challenges they faced, stating that the memories of that fateful night — the howling winds and torrential rain — are branded in her mind. With communications cut off and movement severely restricted, she described the fear and confusion that accompanied the loss of her husband. “We were worried because my husband was lying dead and we did not know what to do next,” she shared.

In the aftermath of the cyclone, which recorded Mr. Voreqe as its 16th fatality, their eldest son, Luke Nacei, rose to the occasion, ensuring the safety of his siblings during the chaotic storm. Ms. Voreqe expressed gratitude for the strength bestowed upon them through their faith, allowing them to navigate the aftermath of such a harrowing event.

Over the years, she has witnessed how their shared beliefs helped not only in overcoming the profound loss but also in shaping the future of their children. The experience of losing their father at a tender age was undoubtedly heartbreaking, yet it forged an indomitable resolve within the family. Ms. Voreqe continues to find solace in her faith, affirming that it has been vital in guiding her and her children as they move forward together.

As the Voreqe family commemorates the decade since their tragic loss, they remain a testament to resilience and hope in the face of adversity, showing that even the most profound sorrow can nurture strength and unity.
