Fiji Airways’ men’s sevens debutant Nacani Boginisoko delivered a standout performance on the first day of the Singapore 7s tournament on Saturday evening. Making his first career start against South Africa in a highly anticipated match, Boginisoko did not falter under pressure.
As the game approached its climax, the teams were locked at 19–19, leading to a tense period of golden-point extra time. Fiji kicked off to commence the extra period, with South Africa initially seizing possession and looking to mount an attack. However, a cross-field kick that had previously proven effective fell short, allowing Fiji to regain control from a lineout.
Boginisoko then took center stage; receiving the ball on the right flank, he demonstrated impressive strength and agility as he broke through South Africa’s defense and sprinted to score a decisive try under the posts, securing a thrilling victory for Fiji.
Coach Osea Kolinisau noted that his strategy of rotating the squad was focused on providing younger players with vital experience, especially after securing a place in the semi-finals. “South Africa was not going to be easy. I made some changes so that the young players can get a taste of what to expect tomorrow (second day),” Kolinisau explained.
While celebrating the win, the coach acknowledged the team’s room for improvement, specifically mentioning some missed tackles and unnecessary knock-ons that need addressing before the semi-final match. Fiji was set to face New Zealand in the semi-finals later that night, adding to the excitement surrounding the tournament.
This type of performance from new players like Boginisoko not only enriches the team’s depth but also raises hopes for Fiji’s chances in the ongoing competition. The spirit and skill displayed on the field signify a bright future for Fiji rugby as they vie for greatness in the Singapore 7s.
