Ponipate Loganimasi, a debutant for the Flying Fijians, made an impressive entry by scoring two tries in their match against Japan, leading Fiji to a 41-17 victory and securing the Pacific Nations Cup title on Saturday.
Loganimasi entered the game in the second half and made an immediate impact, scoring in the 59th minute to push Fiji’s lead to 18-10. His second try came in the 74th minute, complemented by a successful conversion from Isaiah Armstrong Ravula, solidifying their championship win.
The young player was included in the team’s lineup as a substitute for Selestino Ravutaumada, who is currently recovering from surgery. Coach Mick Byrne lauded Loganimasi’s performance, noting that the opportunity arose due to Ravutaumada’s injury.
“Ponipate (Loganimasi) was there, and an opportunity came, ironically, through Selestino’s injury. He’s had a great debut and we’re looking forward to the career that’s in front of him,” Byrne stated during a post-match press conference.
Byrne also mentioned that it was player Iosefo Masi who suggested Loganimasi take Ravutaumada’s place in the lineup. When questioned about Loganimasi’s physique, Byrne affirmed that it did not pose a concern.
“I think he has a great size and as a young player, he’s got a great frame to work on and he’s got a big future in front of him,” he said.
