Ponipate Loganimasi, a debutant for the Flying Fijians, made a significant impact by scoring two tries that contributed to his team’s 41-17 victory over Japan, securing the Pacific Nations Cup title on Saturday. Loganimasi entered the game in the second half, scoring his first try in the 59th minute, which increased Fiji’s lead to 18-10. He added another try in the 74th minute, with a successful conversion by Isaiah Armstrong Ravula sealing the win.
Loganimasi was chosen to fill in for Selestino Ravutaumada, who is currently recovering from surgery. Team coach Mick Byrne commended Loganimasi for his impressive performance and noted that his inclusion provided a chance to showcase his skills.
“Ponipate (Loganimasi) stepped up when the opportunity arose, albeit through Selestino’s injury,” Byrne stated at the post-match press conference. He expressed excitement about Loganimasi’s future in the sport.
Byrne also mentioned that Iosefo Masi recommended Loganimasi as a substitute for Ravutaumada, leading to his selection for the match. When asked about Loganimasi’s physique, Byrne dismissed concerns regarding his size, saying, “He has a great size and as a young player, he possesses a strong frame to develop further, with a promising future ahead of him.”
