Ponipate Loganimasi, making his debut for the Flying Fijians, scored two tries in a commanding 41-17 victory over Japan, securing the Pacific Nations Cup title on Saturday.
Loganimasi entered the game in the second half and made an immediate impact, scoring a try in the 59th minute, which increased Fiji’s lead to 18-10. He added another try in the 74th minute, complemented by a successful conversion from Isaiah Armstrong Ravula, solidifying the team’s win.
Loganimasi stepped in to replace Selestino Ravutaumada, who is recovering from surgery. Coach Mick Byrne commended Loganimasi’s performance, noting that Ravutaumada’s injury created an opportunity for the debutant.
“Ponipate was there, and an opportunity came, ironically, through Selestino’s injury. He’s had a great debut, and we’re looking forward to the career that’s in front of him,” Byrne said during a post-match press conference.
Byrne mentioned that Iosefo Masi recommended Loganimasi to take Ravutaumada’s place on the team. When asked about concerns regarding Loganimasi’s size, Byrne expressed confidence in his physical attributes.
“I think he has a great size, and as a young player, he’s got a great frame to work on and he’s got a big future in front of him,” Byrne added.
