Deadly Oversight: Resort Safety Under Scrutiny

Opposition MP Joseph Nand has expressed profound concern over the recent findings related to the death of a Japanese tourist at a resort in Sigatoka, labeling them as “shocking and unacceptable.” His remarks follow the tragic passing of a 50-year-old Japanese national who faced difficulties while snorkeling in the resort’s waters earlier this month.

In his statement, Nand criticized the resort for its apparent negligence in safeguarding its guests, expressing disbelief at the lack of welfare and duty of care being practiced. He underscored a broader issue, warning that the findings from the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) investigation are alarming and could indicate potential safety lapses at other resorts as well.

Nand emphasized the need for urgent strategic interventions to enhance safety standards within the hospitality sector. He pointed to a noticeable inadequacy in the enforcement of OHS compliance by relevant authorities, raising critical questions such as the frequency of inspections and the actions taken against those who do not meet required standards.

While he acknowledged the prompt investigation initiated by Minister Singh, Nand stated that the focus must turn to the implementation of measures designed to prevent future tragedies and enhance the safety protocols in place to protect visitors.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of continuous monitoring and improvement of safety regulations in the tourism sector, highlighting the need for accountability and diligence to ensure the well-being of all guests. By addressing these concerns, stakeholders can work towards building a safer and more secure environment for tourists, fostering confidence in the industry moving forward.
