Two tragic incidents involving fatal accidents were reported yesterday morning in the Western Division, specifically in Lautoka. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, both accidents occurred in the early hours.
The first incident took place shortly after midnight and resulted in the death of a 38-year-old man. It is alleged that he lost control of his vehicle while driving along Barara flat towards Nadi, causing it to veer off the road. The man and three passengers in the car were rushed to Lautoka Hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, two of the passengers remain hospitalized but are in stable condition, while the third passenger has been discharged.
The second accident occurred around 3 am along Drasa Avenue and is suspected to be a hit and run. A 26-year-old man was found by a passerby who quickly took him to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. SSP Divuana stated that traffic investigators are working to identify the vehicle involved and gather further details.
Additionally, in another serious accident, a 22-year-old man sustained significant injuries after his vehicle collided with the trailer of a parked truck in Wailada, Lami. He was transported to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he remains under medical care.
In the broader context of road safety, it is noted that the current road death toll stands at 50, significantly lower than the 71 recorded during the same period last year, offering a glimmer of hope amidst these unfortunate events.
The investigations into these incidents are ongoing, emphasizing the importance of road safety and vigilance while driving.
This serves as a reminder to all motorists to remain cautious, adhere to traffic regulations, and prioritize safety on the roads.
