A devastating fire at a seven-storey office building in Jakarta has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 22 lives, prompting ongoing efforts by authorities to locate any additional victims. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon while many employees were reportedly having lunch, according to city police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro.
Authorities believe that the fire ignited after a battery exploded on the first floor, rapidly spreading upward through the building. Among the businesses located within the structure is a company specializing in drone manufacturing.
Most of the confirmed victims are women, including a pregnant woman. Reports indicate that the cause of death for many individuals was asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation rather than burns.
This tragic event underscores the urgent need for stringent safety measures in office buildings, particularly those housing hazardous materials. The community is mourning the loss, and local officials are committed to investigating the cause of the fire to prevent future occurrences.
