An Israeli airstrike near a distribution point run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Rafah resulted in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and left over 115 others wounded, as reported by Palestinian news agency WAFA and media outlets affiliated with Hamas. The incident took place on Sunday, with Israel yet to release a statement in response to the attack.

The GHF was established in Gaza, reportedly with Israeli support, to facilitate humanitarian aid distribution while employing biometric checks to prevent aid from reaching those affiliated with Hamas. However, the organization has faced skepticism from some Palestinians regarding its impartiality and the ethics of its data collection methods. This latest violence is particularly concerning as it adds to a history of past incidents involving the GHF, notably an airstrike on May 28 that led to multiple fatalities near another GHF distribution center, which Hamas attributed to Israeli military actions.

Following this airstrike, tensions surrounding aid accessibility and civilian safety are expected to escalate, further complicating the already fragile humanitarian situation in southern Gaza, where an urgent need for support persists. Amid ongoing conflict since October 2023, the humanitarian crisis continues to deepen, with numerous casualties reported and a high level of distress among the population.

Looking back, previous airstrikes have consistently raised alarms regarding civilian safety, often resulting in substantial loss of life. Recent reports show that since the conflict reignited, over 53,000 Palestinians have died, mostly civilians. This continuous cycle of violence makes humanitarian assistance critical.

It is vital that the international community ramps up its efforts to secure a ceasefire and aid access. The resilience of the Gazan people in finding ways to survive amidst adversity is commendable, and there remains a glimmer of hope that with sustained global engagement and support, conditions can improve for those in need. As discussions for a ceasefire continue, the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring humanitarian access cannot be overstated.
