Deadline Looms for DPP in High-Profile Case

The Magistrates Court has set a deadline for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to submit a supplementary affidavit in the case involving former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The court has mandated that the DPP must serve the defense by this afternoon.

Senior DPP Counsel Unaisi Ratukalou informed the court that she received instructions only yesterday to request additional time for filing the affidavit, which focuses on a differing medical opinion from another neurologist concerning Sayed-Khaiyum’s health condition. Ratukalou indicated there is uncertainty regarding Sayed-Khaiyum’s medical status and whether a health review could take place in Fiji rather than in Singapore.

The defense attorney, Davenesh Sharma, contested the prosecution’s request, arguing that the DPP was adequately informed as early as July 15, allowing sufficient time for a response. Sharma emphasized that Sayed-Khaiyum is prepared to testify, and one of the prosecution witnesses is also ready to provide evidence.

The court has adjourned the hearing until tomorrow at noon for a bail variation discussion.
