The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a final reminder to over 14,600 tenants who have not settled their lease arrears, amounting to a staggering $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to resolve their outstanding payments as soon as possible to prevent any legal action.
Isoa Tuwai, the general manager for Estate Services at TLTB, stressed the importance of addressing these debts promptly. He explained that timely payments are necessary to ensure that lease payments are made to landowners without delay. Tuwai emphasized the tenants’ obligation to pay lease rental and administration fees in advance on January 1 and July 1 each year, as outlined in their lease agreements.
“We are dedicated to collaborating with our tenants to find viable solutions, but it is essential that arrears are cleared to avoid complications,” Tuwai stated. He encouraged tenants to reach out for assistance if their lease falls into any specified category, noting that partial payments could be accepted under certain conditions.
Moreover, tenants were advised to explore financial assistance through their respective commercial banks, a step supported by TLTB’s earlier arrangements. Tuwai strongly advised them to address their outstanding payments promptly to avert any disappointments.
He also provided a crucial notice reminding tenants that landowners are missing out on vital revenue due to these arrears. Tenants were warned that if payments are not made by November 30, 2024, the Board may have to publicly list the names of those in arrears and initiate legal proceedings, potentially leading to the cancellation of leases and forfeiture of property.
