Shyla Prasad, representing the Ministry of Health at this year’s Hibiscus Festival, emphasizes that true richness lies in happiness, health, and peace of mind. With a commitment to promoting holistic well-being, she is focused on raising awareness about healthcare issues, particularly concerning HIV and AIDS, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and mental health.

A dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist with a deep passion for both healthcare and animal welfare, Shyla grew up in Lautoka after being born in Labasa. She pursued her education at Natabua High School before moving to Suva to obtain a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science degree from the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences.

Now with three years of professional experience at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM), Shyla feels honored to represent her workplace on the Miss Hibiscus platform. She expressed her growing affection for Suva, where she works in Fiji’s largest and historic hospital, which this year marks its 101st anniversary. The hospital honors Fijians who served in the First World War, adding to its historical value for Shyla.

In addition to her medical career, Shyla is a sports enthusiast, a traveler, and an animal lover. Her hobbies include fishing, reading, and participating in sports. She is also actively engaged in volunteer work, including outreach programs organized by the Sai Prema Foundation at the Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre. Her dedication to animal welfare is manifested in her community efforts to care for and find homes for stray animals, and she aspires to open her own animal shelter in the future.

Shyla is one of ten contestants competing for the title at the 68th Hibiscus Festival, which will take place at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre from August 31 to September 7. With FMF and Vodafone as gold sponsors, this year’s festival is set to be an exciting event, showcasing the talents and advocates of Fiji’s finest.
