Defending champions Dawasamu Secondary School are on course to retain their Weet-Bix Raluve under-18 title after a hard-fought 19-12 victory against Shri Gurunanak Khalsa College in the national quarter-finals held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.
From the outset, Dawasamu showcased their strength with a solid defense and a powerful offensive strategy. They took an early lead, establishing dominance with a 19-0 advantage at halftime. Although Shri Gurunanak mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, Dawasamu managed to hold on for the win.
Head coach Peniasi Kuruibure praised his team’s performance and acknowledged the impressive challenge posed by Khalsa College. He said, “It was a hard-fought match; we appreciate Khalsa College for providing such tough competition on the field.” Kuruibure highlighted the lessons learned, particularly regarding defense strategies, which they plan to enhance before the semi-final match.
At halftime, Kuruibure encouraged his players to maintain possession, secure the ball, and keep advancing, which played a crucial role in their success. He also pointed out specific defensive weaknesses that the team would address in preparation for their next game.
“There are key areas we need to focus on, particularly improving our defense as we get ready to face Natabua,” he noted. After the quarter-final win, Kuruibure stressed the importance of rest and recovery for the players before resuming training to prepare for the semi-final, with the aim of securing another victory in their title defense.
In other under-16 matches, Sigatoka Methodist College triumphed over Nasinu 31-0, Adi Cakobau School defeated Votualevu College 20-15, Niusawa College won against Naitasiri Secondary School with a score of 27-0, and Lelean Memorial School beat Labasa Sangam 20-5.
In the under-18 category, Natabua College achieved a resounding 41-0 victory over Nasinu, Bucalevu Secondary School narrowly defeated Lomary 15-12, and Adi Cakobau School emerged victorious against Jasper Williams High School with a score of 34-24, while Dawasamu Secondary School clinched their thrilling 19-12 win against Khalsa College.
