Excitement is mounting for the Vodafone Super Deans under-18 rugby competition final taking place today, featuring a match-up between the defending champions, Queen Victoria School, and Nasinu Secondary School.
Mika Yasiyasi, the head coach of Nasinu’s U18 team, drew parallels to the biblical tale of David and Goliath to express the significance of the final. Yasiyasi noted that his team is entering this showdown after a 12-year absence from this level of competition, viewing themselves as the underdogs against QVS, a prominent force in secondary school rugby.
“Before we take to the field, I always remind the boys that we are the David against whatever Goliath we face. We will embrace our role as the David in this match, focusing on our unity, which gives us strength,” Yasiyasi commented.
While QVS is familiar with the final stage, they are mindful of the capabilities of their opponents. Head coach Josaia Waiwalu acknowledged Nasinu’s undefeated record, emphasizing that they are deserving contenders for the Deans Trophy. “Nasinu is a formidable opponent. They rightly belong in this final, and we are looking forward to a compelling match,” Waiwalu said.
Nasinu aims to forge a new legacy for their school, while QVS seeks to uphold their rich history with the Deans Trophy, which has been contested since 1939. The outcome of this highly anticipated clash will be revealed today at 5:30 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
