Wellington Phoenix have officially parted ways with club favorite David Ball after five and a half years, a decision that enables the team to explore new talent ahead of the upcoming A-League transfer window. The 35-year-old English striker and the club reached a mutual agreement to terminate the remaining six months of his contract.
Ball’s departure comes after a limited involvement this season, where he made only one appearance as a substitute in the season opener. Under coach Giancarlo Italiano’s strategy that favors younger players, Ball’s position in the squad became increasingly untenable. Currently, the Phoenix are struggling in the league, sitting at 10th place and having lost six of their 11 matches.
During his tenure with the Phoenix, Ball made a significant impact, totaling 122 appearances, scoring 15 goals, and providing 26 assists. He was instrumental in helping the team reach the finals in four out of his five full seasons with the club. Reflecting on his journey, Ball expressed his emotional attachment to the team, stating, “I’ve put my heart and soul into the club since I got here and I’ve fallen in love with the Nix, the people around it, and the fans.”
His accolades include being named Player of the Year in 2020, where he contributed to the team achieving its highest regular-season finish at third place. Ball hopes to continue his playing career, ideally in New Zealand, while emphasizing the need to spend more time with his family.
Phoenix director of football Shaun Gill praised Ball as “the ultimate pro,” acknowledging his influence on younger players. Team captain Alex Rufer also highlighted the profound impact Ball had on the squad, especially during challenging times, including relocating during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the team looks to fill the void left by Ball, optimism abounds regarding potential new signings as the transfer window opens on Thursday. The Phoenix, currently seeking stability, may find fresh promise in reinvigorated talent to enhance their performance on the pitch.
This development showcases not just a transition for Ball but an opportunity for the Wellington Phoenix to revitalize their squad and strive towards a more competitive A-League season ahead.
