The Wellington Phoenix have officially announced the departure of veteran striker David Ball, a significant figure for the club over the past five and a half years. Both the club and the 35-year-old English forward reached a mutual agreement to terminate the remaining six months of his contract, allowing the Phoenix to explore new talent ahead of the upcoming A-League transfer window.

During his tenure, Ball made 122 appearances for the Phoenix, netting 15 goals and providing 26 assists. His contributions aided the team in reaching the finals in four out of his five full seasons, and he was notably named Player of the Year in 2020, which coincided with the club’s highest-ever regular-season finish of third place.

This season, however, Ball’s playing time was limited, with only one substitute appearance, as coach Giancarlo Italiano opted to focus on younger players. The Phoenix are currently anchored at 10th place in the league standings, with six losses in their first eleven matches, a situation that has urged the need for fresh talent.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Ball expressed deep emotional ties, stating that the Phoenix has been a significant part of his life and his family’s life. “I’ve put my heart and soul into the club since I got here,” he remarked, highlighting the bond he developed with the team and its supporters.

Director of football Shaun Gill praised Ball as “the ultimate pro,” recognizing his positive influence on younger players within the academy. Club captain Alex Rufer also emphasized Ball’s crucial role during challenging times, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when the team relocated to Australia for two seasons.

Ball stated his desire to continue playing, ideally within New Zealand, while also prioritizing time with his family. The opening of the transfer window presents a timely opportunity for the Wellington Phoenix to refresh their roster and seek players who can contribute to the team’s resurgence in the league.

Upon leaving, Ball leaves behind a proud legacy as a beloved figure at the Phoenix, and transitioning into a new chapter, both for him and the club, holds promise for renewed energy and future competitive success. Fans are likely to remember his significant contributions with fondness as the Phoenix embarks on this new journey to improve its performance in the league.
