Rugby Australia and the Queensland Reds have announced that standout back Filipo Daugunu has signed a new contract, ensuring his presence in Australian rugby until 2027. The 30-year-old, who hails from Labasa, Fiji, has been a vital player for the Reds this season, demonstrating remarkable skill and versatility on the field.

Daugunu, who made the move to Brisbane in 2017, quickly captured attention with his impressive performances for Queensland Country in the National Rugby Championship, leading to his debut in Super Rugby the following year. Since then, he has established himself as a key player for the Wallabies, debuting in 2020 and having scored a significant try against the All Blacks.

His recent resurgence on the international scene under Coach Joe Schmidt included a remarkable performance against Wales, although his season was cut short by injury during a match against South Africa. With 11 Test caps and 78 appearances for the Reds, Daugunu’s commitment to the team is a positive sign for Australian rugby as they prepare for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Expressing his happiness about the contract extension, Daugunu stated, “I’m happy and blessed… I’d love to be involved in the British & Irish Lions Series with the Wallabies.”

Director of High Performance at Rugby Australia, Peter Horne, and Queensland Reds Head Coach Les Kiss both acknowledged Daugunu’s exceptional form, versatility, and the positive influence he brings to the team dynamic.

As the Queensland Reds gear up for their final Super Rugby match against the Fijian Drua, fans are excited to see Daugunu continue to excel. His ongoing tenure with the Reds not only strengthens the team’s lineup but also highlights the vibrant talent within Australian rugby, promising an exciting future for the sport domestically.

This contract extension not only benefits Daugunu and the Reds but also serves as a testament to the potential growth of Australian rugby, fostering a competitive environment as they look ahead to future international competitions.
