Two individuals, Sireli Veikoso, 22, and Inise Jessie Vitalina, 27, have been further remanded in custody following their appearance in the Suva Magistrate’s Court related to an aggravated robbery incident that took place earlier this month on Butt Street in Suva. The case has gained attention after dashcam footage of the alleged assault circulated widely on social media.
The two are accused of assaulting Surendra Singh Rawat and stealing his phone, $50 in cash, and a BSP bank card, which was later used to withdraw $10. The total value of the stolen belongings is reported to be $359. The incident occurred on June 15, and a formal complaint was filed on June 20, aided by the public sharing of video footage and CCTV evidence from local businesses.
During the court proceedings, both defendants represented themselves, with Mr. Veikoso requesting bail by highlighting his role as the family’s breadwinner, while Ms. Vitalina expressed remorse and attributed her actions to intoxication. Police Prosecutor Sereinagata Elenoa contested the bail request, emphasizing the serious nature of the charges and the strength of the prosecution’s case, which included full admissions made by the accused during their caution interview.
Magistrate Charles Ratakele decided to remand both defendants, noting that the charges are indictable and will be transferred to the High Court. The next court appearance is scheduled for July 9, with the possibility of applying for bail at the High Court a week later on July 17.
This incident reflects ongoing challenges within community safety but also showcases the important role of social media and collaborative efforts in facilitating swift law enforcement responses. It is hoped that the judicial process will ensure justice for the victim and reinforce public confidence in legal measures against crime.
