The LICI-sponsored Lami Darts Association doubles tournament took place over the weekend, showcasing a remarkable turnout with 32 teams and 64 players participating. Brothers Romit Mahabir and Robyn Mahabir claimed victory, earning the championship title in this exciting two-day event.

National head coach of the Fiji Darts Association, Alan Veeran, expressed his enthusiasm for the tournament, highlighting the high level of competition throughout the matches. He noted that the structured format, including pool stages, effectively tested both the mental fortitude and composure of the players.

In addition to celebrating the tournament’s success, Veeran shared plans for future events, revealing that Lami aims to host three more tournaments this year. He also mentioned a team league in Suva starting mid-July and a Tri-Nations tournament scheduled for October.

Veeran emphasized the significance of darts as a non-contact sport that can appeal to those who may not participate in more physically demanding sports like soccer or rugby. He encouraged individuals interested in taking up darts, stating that the country currently has around 14 teams eager for new players.

The coach expressed gratitude towards LICI for their continued sponsorship support and urged more corporate entities to get involved to further develop the darts scene. His long-term vision includes aspirations for Fiji to become champions at the South Pacific Darts championship set to take place in the Cook Islands in 2027.

This tournament not only highlighted the competitive spirit among participants but also illustrated the growing enthusiasm for darts in Fiji. The sense of community and collaboration came through not only in the competition but in the support received from sponsors, showcasing a hopeful future for the sport.

Veeran’s call to action for more individuals to take up darts promises to inspire more players to join the community, further enriching the sport’s presence in Fiji and paving the way for future success in the international arena.
