A man has been apprehended after scaling a telecommunications tower and breaching a fence to access a storage area housing over $2 billion worth of confiscated methamphetamine. His arrest occurred in the early hours yesterday at a facility belonging to the Fiji Police Mobile Force, where he was allegedly attempting to tamper with CCTV cameras monitoring the containers holding the illegal drugs.

Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci confirmed that the suspect is in custody as investigations continue to determine his motives and intentions. The seized drugs, including a significant four tonnes of methamphetamine taken in Nadi, are heavily secured, with an “enhanced” security protocol in place.

Raikaci emphasized that the security measures are effectively monitored through a Command Centre, which operates with support from the Australian Federal Police. Additionally, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sakeo Ganivatu remarked during a meeting in Navua that this incident underscores the presence of an organized drug network attempting to compromise the safety of secured substances.

Authorities are actively investigating the attempted breach, highlighting their commitment to combating drug-related crime and ensuring community safety.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the vigilance required from law enforcement. Cooperation with international partners like the Australian Federal Police showcases a unified effort in addressing drug-related issues, creating hope for a future with reduced drug crimes and safer communities.
