A man has been taken into police custody after climbing a telecommunications tower and breaching a fence to enter a storage site that holds over $2 billion worth of seized methamphetamine. Police arrested him in the early hours of yesterday as he attempted to tamper with CCTV cameras monitoring the containers housing the drugs.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to determine the individual’s motives and intentions regarding the incident. He emphasized that the seized drugs, including four tonnes of methamphetamine confiscated in Nadi, are under strict protection due to enhanced security measures at the Fiji Police Mobile Force premises. These security measures are bolstered by monitoring from the Command Centre, which has received support from the Australian Federal Police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Ganivatu, highlighted the incident as evidence of an active drug network that was attempting to steal the secured substances.

This alarming event serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking. However, the swift action taken by the police demonstrates their commitment to protecting the community and controlling the drug trade. Effective collaboration with international law enforcement also illustrates that efforts against drug-related crimes are gaining ground, providing hope for a further reduction in drug trafficking activities in the region.
