The Oceania Dance Theatre (ODT) at the University of the South Pacific serves as a vital platform for dancers to showcase their talents while celebrating the diverse and rich heritage of the Pacific Islands. Dance, as a powerful mode of artistic expression, embodies movement, storytelling, and cultural celebration.

Roko Unaisi Finau Likusuasua Banivanua, a seasoned member and choreographer for ODT, embodies dedication and passion in this creative field. Originally from Lau and with strong connections to Tavualevu, Roko’s love for dance blossomed in her childhood, encouraged by joyous family dance battles ignited by her mother’s love for music. This early exposure laid the foundation for her artistic journey.

Since joining ODT as an artist in 2022, Roko has made significant strides, performing at notable events such as the Allan Alo Arts Festival, Fiji Fringe Festival, and Melanesian Day. Her choreography not only highlights Pacific identity but also challenges the limits of artistic creativity, inspiring others to reconnect with their cultural roots.

Roko acknowledges the challenge of balancing her dance career with motherhood, emphasizing the need for careful planning and a supportive community. She maintains a structured schedule that prioritizes quality time with her son while finding moments early in the day and late at night for her passion. Her successful navigation of these responsibilities showcases her resilience and commitment.

Looking ahead, Roko aspires to become a full-time choreographer and to establish her own dance company, aiming to further enrich the Pacific arts scene.

In a broader context, Roko’s journey mirrors the resilience seen in other artists across the region facing similar challenges. Just as artist Mere Rasue has transformed her life through art, Roko’s story highlights the power of perseverance and community support in nurturing talent and cultural identity in a rapidly changing world. This collective enthusiasm for the arts not only fosters individual growth but also contributes to the preservation and celebration of Pacific heritage for future generations.
