Residents of Daku Village in Buretu, Tailevu, are now better equipped to face natural disasters thanks to the newly inaugurated Daku Village Evacuation Centre Retrofitting Project and a new Ablution Block Project, together valued at over $120,000. These critical upgrades were made possible through funding from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management and were officially commissioned by Minister Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka.

Minister Ditoka emphasized that these initiatives not only represent significant infrastructure improvements but are essential for safeguarding lives and fostering community empowerment as Fiji braces for another cyclone season. “This project is not just about infrastructure; it’s about protecting lives, ensuring dignity, and empowering communities to be better prepared,” he stated.

The retrofitted evacuation centre now offers a safe and cyclone-resilient shelter, complete with improved sanitation facilities and essential services that will support families during emergencies. The addition of the ablution block is vital for maintaining hygiene and comfort during extended evacuation periods.

Village leaders are encouraged to take ownership of these new facilities to ensure their long-term sustainability. Village Headman Mr. Uraia Vuetibau expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government for this timely support, acknowledging the impact of climate change, such as rising sea levels and increased flooding, on their community. “These new facilities will help us stay safe and recover faster when disasters strike,” he remarked.

This project aligns with Fiji’s broader commitment to enhancing the resilience of rural communities, ensuring that no Fijian is left vulnerable in the face of climate change. Similar initiatives have also been seen in other Fijian villages, such as Naivakacau and Yalobi, where evacuation centres have been established or upgraded to improve disaster preparedness and community safety.

As these centers are developed and enhanced, there is growing optimism that they will serve as crucial lifelines for communities, fostering a safer and more resilient future for all Fijians. Such projects not only represent hope for better preparedness in the face of natural disasters but also reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of its citizens in remote and vulnerable areas.
