The iTaukei Lands Trust Board currently oversees 73 active dairy leases, as confirmed by iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu in response to inquiries from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu regarding the renewal of these leases since 2023. These dairy leases are crucial for supporting farmers involved in milk production, which plays an essential role in sustaining rural livelihoods and enhancing national food security.
From 2023 to 2025, a total of 16 dairy leases have been formally activated. This includes nine renewals of expired or expiring leases for existing farmers and seven new lease activations, catering to either new applicants or those previously inactive. The new leases collectively encompass over 290 hectares of land, with annual rental rates established through agreements between the TLTB and landowning units.
Minister Vasu emphasized the importance of secure land tenure for dairy farmers, stating that lease renewals are vital not only for providing long-term security but also for maintaining land productivity and generating rental income for landowners.
