A flood warning has been issued for low-lying and flood-prone areas near the Nakauvadra River in Rakiraki Town, as well as along the Yaqara River in Naseyani and the Tavua River at Nasivi and the Tavua Town Bridge. Additionally, a flood alert is now in effect for the floodplains of the Ba River.
The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that Tropical Cyclone URMIL, currently a Category 2 system, is located to the west-southwest of Kadavu and is tracking southeastward. This cyclone has brought active rainbands and strong northwesterly winds that are impacting many parts of Fiji.
Weather officials have expressed concerns that these conditions heighten the risk of river flooding, particularly in catchment areas that have already experienced prolonged rainfall. Today’s high tide is expected to reach 2.23 meters at 4:43 PM in Lautoka, while in Suva, it will peak at 5:56 PM.
Authorities have warned that the combination of considerable rainfall, rising river levels, and high tides could exacerbate flooding in affected areas. Data indicates that water levels in Rakiraki, Tavua, and Ba are rising above alert and warning thresholds.
Residents in these areas, as well as downstream communities, are advised to remain vigilant, avoid crossing rivers and flooded roads, and adhere to all official weather warnings and advisories as the situation evolves. This emphasizes the importance of community awareness and preparedness in mitigating the impacts of severe weather events.
