Tropical Cyclone Urmil, despite not making landfall, significantly impacted Fiji’s Western Division with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding. The severe weather led to the closure of schools nationwide until further notice as authorities monitored the situation.

Many areas including Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi faced persistent rainfall that forced several residents to evacuate to higher ground for safety. The main town centers in Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki were inundated, disrupting business operations and access as floodwaters entered shops and public spaces.

Commissioner Western Apolosi Lewaqai reported that survey teams were deployed to assess flooding in low-lying areas. “Even though the weather report indicated that TC Urmil would not affect us, we witnessed the heavy rain’s impact across the Western Division,” stated Lewaqai. He urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors, complying with weather warnings.

In the northern region, conditions were similarly affected, particularly in Rakiraki, where the Naqoro advisory councillor Sami Ram reported that the flood-prone Naqoro flats became completely inaccessible. He expressed hope that the rainfall would cease soon.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro confirmed that schools would remain closed, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety of students and school communities. He encouraged school heads and teachers to maintain communication with management committees for guidance during this period. The Ministry of Education’s Disaster Risk Reduction Unit pledged to continuously monitor the evolving situation and provide updates as necessary.

The Fiji Meteorological Services reported that TC Urmil moved out of Fiji waters last night. The cyclone, classified as a Category 2, was situated approximately 670 kilometers south of Nadi at noon and was expected to exit the area by 6 PM. Authorities remain vigilant and engaged in the recovery efforts as the community reflects on the importance of preparedness for such weather events.
