BA Town was engaged in significant clean-up efforts yesterday morning following the aftermath of Severe Tropical Cyclone Urmil, which left a trail of mud and debris throughout the area. Local kava vendor Birendra Kumar shared his experiences with The Fiji Times, detailing the disruption to his business amidst the recovery.
Mr. Kumar noted, “There was no damage with our kava because we took it all home. But today’s business sales have been affected because it’s the first day of the week and we are closed.” He added that most vendors were not severely impacted since they also took their produce home, allowing them to focus on cleaning their market stalls with the hope of resuming normal operations soon.
As floodwaters spread through the main market area and affected the adjacent bus station, market vendors collaborated with the Ba Town Council to facilitate a thorough clean-up within the Ba Municipal Market. This coordinated effort marks a crucial first step towards restoring business operations.
The impact of Cyclone Urmil has showcased the resilience of the Ba community, uniting them in their efforts to recover and restore their livelihoods. With many vendors optimistic about reopening their stalls, the community is actively moving forward in the face of adversity.
