Tropical Cyclone Seru is anticipated to pose additional flash flood threats as warned by Commissioner of Northern Fiji, Uraia Rainima. During a recent press conference held at Macuata House in Labasa, Rainima urged residents in the Northern Division to prepare for the impending cyclone, emphasizing the risk of further flooding in areas already affected by Tropical Cyclone Rae.
His remarks came following an initial damage assessment, which revealed that certain regions remain flooded and are slowly recovering. The Fiji Roads Authority, along with other agencies, are working tirelessly to repair roads and crossings that have been impacted by the recent severe weather.
“We’ve received warnings of heavy rainfall ahead, and I sincerely hope that those areas already affected won’t face further devastation,” Rainima expressed, reassuring residents that discussions with relevant stakeholders have taken place to address flash flood concerns in low-lying regions of Labasa town.
Rainima noted the necessity for improved drainage systems, particularly in sections of Labasa that frequently flood during extended periods of rainfall. “We’ve reached agreements to enhance these drainage infrastructures this week and into early next week, allowing residents to notice tangible progress at critical exit points,” he stated.
The proactive measures and open communication from the Commissioner’s office reflect the commitment to community safety and preparedness in light of the continuing adverse weather conditions. With the local government’s dedication and the community’s cooperation, there remains hope that the challenges posed by Cyclone Seru can be effectively mitigated.
By staying informed and adhering to safety advisories, residents can work together to navigate these challenging times, fostering resilience and unity within the community.
