Minister for Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka has embarked on a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the government’s response to Tropical Cyclone Rae and evaluate key development projects in the region. Joining him was Assistant Minister Jovesa Vocea, and they were briefed by Commissioner Northern Division Uraia Rainima on recovery efforts for communities affected by the cyclone.
During their discussions, which focused on enhancing infrastructure and driving economic growth in the Northern Division, the team toured locations such as Nasealevu in Macuata and inspected the site of the new Waiqele Airport Terminal, in addition to ongoing accommodation developments at the Damodar complex in Labasa. Minister Ditoka commended government officials for their hard work and dedication to recovery efforts, expressing optimism that these new developments can significantly contribute to the economic growth and resilience of the North.
Previous assessments following Tropical Cyclone Rae have indicated that while localized flooding occurred, significant damage was largely averted. The proactive measures taken, such as assessing the impacts on crops and inspecting infrastructure, reflect a commitment from both local authorities and communities to bounce back from the challenges posed by severe weather events.
