Tropical Cyclone Rae has been elevated to a Category 2 storm and is located about 70 kilometers northeast of Taveuni, Fiji, as reported by the Fiji Meteorological Service. Meteorologists project that the cyclone is likely to escalate to a Severe Tropical Cyclone, Category 3, later today.
Currently, TC Rae has maximum sustained winds of 90 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 130 km/h. Once it strengthens into Category 3, sustained winds are expected to increase to 120 km/h and gusts could hit 170 km/h. The cyclone is moving south-southwest at approximately 15 km/h and is on a direct trajectory toward the Lau group.
In preparation for the severe weather, a hurricane warning is now in effect for the Southern Koro Sea and Southern Lau waters. Furthermore, a storm warning has been issued for the Northern Koro Sea, Northern Vanua Levu, and Northern Lau waters. Warnings for strong winds apply to all other waters surrounding Fiji.
Fiji’s history of resilience during such storms is noteworthy. For instance, during Tropical Disturbance 01F, the community demonstrated solidarity and preparedness, essential in the face of nature’s challenges. Local leaders are again urging residents to secure their homes, gather emergency supplies, and stay informed through local updates.
As the Fijian population prepares for potential hardships ahead, their ability to unite and respond collectively will play a crucial role in lessening the impacts of the storm. The community’s past experiences offer hope that their togetherness will help them overcome this potential challenge.
