Tropical Cyclone Rae has upgraded to the upper range of Category 2 as it continues its south-southeast trajectory, moving away from the Fiji Islands. As of 6 AM today, the cyclone was located about 100 kilometers south-southwest of Ono-i-Lau and is traveling at a speed of 23 kilometers per hour, according to Amit Singh, Acting Manager of the Fiji Meteorological Service.

Singh noted that wind speeds are expected to decrease across most areas, which will lead to the cancellation of the special weather bulletin later today. Additionally, warnings regarding gale and storm-force winds are likely to be lifted in the coming hours.

While rain is expected to continue this morning, heavy downpours are predicted to ease in the evening, with lighter showers persisting into tomorrow. A new weather system near Vanuatu, referred to as TD 10F, is anticipated to enhance rain activity on Thursday, potentially developing into a tropical depression and possibly a cyclone within 24 to 36 hours.

Although Cyclone Rae is not forecasted to make direct landfall in Fiji, the ensuing convergence zone and low-pressure trough could still bring significant rainfall and strong winds from Thursday through Friday.

Reflecting on past experiences with similar storms, local leaders are emphasizing the critical nature of preparedness and community solidarity during adverse weather events. Historically, the cooperation among residents has played a crucial role in mitigating the effects of severe storms. This situation presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Fijian population to come together and demonstrate resilience in facing the storm’s impacts.

The spirit of unity and proactive preparations observed in the Fijian community can greatly mitigate the effects of the storm and ensure safety for all. Staying vigilant through local updates and preparing adequately will be essential in navigating the weather conditions ahead.
