Tropical Cyclone Rae is currently moving away from Fiji but continues to pose risks as authorities warn of strong winds and heavy rainfall in the coming days. The Fiji Meteorological Service has confirmed that a heavy rain warning is in place for the Fiji Group, with potential flooding in low-lying areas and possible road closures.
As of 6 PM yesterday, TC Rae was located approximately 80 kilometers east-north-east of Moala Island in the Lau Group, with sustained winds reaching up to 95 kilometers per hour and gusts anticipated to strengthen further. A storm warning remains effective for several regions including Lakeba, Moce, and Vatoa, while a strong wind warning applies to parts of Vanua Levu and northeastern Viti Levu.
In response to the cyclone, the Fiji Police Force has activated standby teams ready for immediate deployment. Assistant Commissioner of Police Livai Driu has noted that divisional operations teams are closely monitoring the situation, having already received reports regarding the effects of the cyclone, especially in the Lau region.
Moreover, the Ministry of Health has issued a public health advisory addressing the risks associated with the heavy rainfall and flooding. Key health precautions include storing drinking water safely, boiling untreated water to prevent diseases like cholera and dysentery, and avoiding areas that may become flooded.
Fijians are encouraged to stay vigilant, continue monitoring weather updates, and heed official advisories. Historically, community preparedness has proven vital in mitigating the impacts of severe weather events, with collective action emphasized as a means of resilience. As the people of Fiji navigate the challenges posed by TC Rae, their unity and proactive measures will be essential in facing this weather threat together.
The ongoing situation is a reminder of the strength and resilience of the Fijian community. By working together, they can enhance their safety and showcase their enduring spirit against nature’s adversities.
