Cycling enthusiasts Merryl Park, 58, and Ian Flux, 62, from New Zealand, are making their way through Fiji on a month-long cycling tour, embracing the country’s stunning landscapes and local culture. They began their journey on July 24, starting from Nadi, through Sigatoka, and onto the capital, Suva. Their adventure also included a ferry ride to Levuka following a scenic route around Ovalau island.
With over three decades of cycling experiences behind them, the couple enjoys traveling slowly to connect with local people, taste traditional foods, and explore areas away from tourism hotspots. Park, who works part-time as a general practitioner, and Flux, a conservation scientist, describe their excursions as a way to observe daily life in different countries.
The couple faced challenges on the roads of Viti Levu, including encounters with unfriendly dogs and treacherous gravel paths. Despite these hurdles, they remained vigilant, pulling over to let oncoming trucks pass safely. “People have been really friendly, but the dogs — not so much,” Park remarked, sharing a light anecdote about an aggressive dog that once latched onto her bike.
Among their treasured experiences, Park highlighted a particularly memorable trip cycling from Karachi, Pakistan to Singapore, while Flux recalled his summer cycling adventure in Iceland. After departing Ovalau on August 2, the couple traveled along the historic Kings Highway, where they were touched by the generosity of a local family in Namarai who welcomed them into their home after a long day’s ride. They expressed heartfelt gratitude for the kindness shown by the Fijian people, particularly thanking the villagers who offered them tea, breakfast, and lunch.
This journey not only showcases the beauty of Fiji but also reflects the growing trend among travelers seeking authentic experiences, similar to what other couples on separate journeys have discovered, fostering meaningful connections with local communities. The couple’s story serves as an inspiration for others to embrace slow travel, highlighting the richness that comes from immersing oneself in the culture and experiences of a new destination.
